Hi There!

Welcome to my Portfolio page
Here reside my latest and proudest moments as a
human-centered designer
Happy browsing :)

A brief history

My name is Denise Thornberry and I'm a Peruvian industrial designer and recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. I have a background in context research for innovation, applied design thinking, and product + business design and development.

I'm currently in the process of moving to São Paulo, Brasil, where I will pursue my passions in human-centered design: design for social innovation, and user experience design.

Meanwhile, I enjoy thinking of how things should actually work and daydream about Sol LeWitt, Dan Ariely, Chade-Meng Tan and I hanging out.

TEACHING THROUGH GAMING

As product of the 2014 field research GEI (Global Entrepreneurship Initiative) fellowship by Brown University held in Cape Town, I designed a concept for a free mobile game app, specific to Cape Town's township context. The goal of the game is to make basic administrative and financial skills accessible to a much segregated population and ultimately support and empower their entrepreneurial spirit.

Assessing and designing for innova schools

Innova Schools is a privately owned school chain in Peru designed by IDEO. They seek to bring affordable world-class education to low-income families. I worked with them assessing and understanding their business model to give insight on their systems and redesign the yearly design challenge program held at their schools.

HOw do you make a 75 year old business Relevant again?

Since 1940 Botería Negreiros, a small family business, has been the leading equestrian and military made-to-measure bootmaker in Lima, Peru. Five years ago they decided to diversify their hand welted 100% genuine leather boots by making street footwear.

As a consultant, I worked on updating Botería Negreiros' brand image, improving order tracking and performance, and creating new ways to reach their customers during the summer off-season.

the re-imagined pediatric face mask

Fantastic Faces is a product designed to empower pediatric patients in critical conditions. Born from the MIT-RISD Product Design and Development collaborative studio, it reimagines the stigmatizing experience of wearing a medical face mask. It transforms the object that singles out sickness into a vehicle for self-expression and hope.
